Why Playscapes?

Moving parts and social-emotional learning

Traditional playgrounds have elements such as slides, swings and sandboxes that give children wonderful opportunities for the development of proprioception and gross motor development. These elements are static and have limited ways that children can use them, leading to repetitive paths of movement and story as children spend each day outside.

While these physical, repetitive elements of playgrounds are essential to play, Firefly Valley offers additions to traditional playgrounds that encourage creativity and story-led play, leading to increased social-emotional development. Examples of these elements include: mobile fort building materials, mobile walkways with wood "cookies" and boards, mud kitchens (used to make mud pies and cupcakes), store fronts (used to play games around buying and selling, table/chair sets (for games around family/home.) These moving parts are very engaging for children and require communication, creativity, expression and teamwork. The skills needed by the next generation. The most immediate, efficent way for children to gain these crucial skills is through play. Let's set them up for success.
