Beginning Throwing- Dinnerware Class

Adults, would you like to get off devices together with your older kiddo in your life in a creative environment with Ms. Kayla?  

In this eight week series, older kids and adults (aged 11 and up)  are welcome to learn to throw on the wheel!  Artists will receive demonstrations at the beginning of each class and hands on guidance while they create their own works of art.

Throwing pottery on the wheel requires patience and practice so we will focus on vital elements such as centering, posture, pressure, proper use of tools, water, and wheel speed. We will learn how to throw cups, mugs with handles, bowls, plates and more. During the last 15 minutes of class, each potter is expected to help clean their wheel and tools.

Seven weeks of this course will be dedicated to throwing on the wheel,  trimming, and well as attaching handles or texture. We ensure all pieces are thoroughly dried before entering the kiln for a bisque fire. Our seventh class will be focused on glazing, which is the process of adding color and food safe gloss over their pottery. Their pieces will then be fired a second time in the kiln before they are ready to go home. We invite families to attend the last part of our eighth class for our art show where we display each potter’s work and celebrate their accomplishments. This winter course will take place mostly outside under a covered outdoor studio. We have an indoor studio if it is too cold. We will make a dinnerware set as our final goal! 

Potters will be encouraged to cut long nails for throwing, use hair ties for long hair and bring photos of work they find inspirational.
